(mo͞orō`räN), city (1990 pop. 117,855), SW Hokkaido, Japan, on Uchiura Bay. It is a major industrial center and port, with iron, steel, and cement works and an oil refinery. Hot spring resorts are nearby.

a city in Japan in southwest Hokkaido. Capital of the district of Iburi. Population, 162,000 (1970). Muroran is one of the major ports and industrial centers of Hokkaido. The major export is coal. A large metallurgical combine is located there. Agricultural machinery, railroad cars, chemicals, and lumber are produced, and oil is refined. There are shipyards for construction and repair, and the city is a whaling port. The Ishikari coal basin is located near Muroran.
