Novosel’skii, Aleksei Andreevich

 

Born Oct. 4 (16), 1891, in Tambov; died Oct. 27, 1967, in Moscow. Soviet historian and professor (1946). Doctor of Historical Sciences (1946). Member of the CPSU from 1951.

Novosel’skii graduated from Moscow University in 1915. In the 1920’s, 1930’s, and 1940’s he worked in a number of Soviet higher educational and scholarly institutions. In 1946, Novosel’skii began working at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, where in 1950 and 1951 he was head of the section for the feudal history of the USSR. From 1951 to 1953 he was the institute’s deputy director, and from 1953 to 1963 he served as head of the section for the study of sources and publication of documents from the pre-October period.

Novosel’skii’s principal works deal with the history of agriculture and foreign policy in 17th-century Russia, subsidiary historical disciplines, and the study of sources and archives. He was one of the authors and editors of The History of Moscow and Essays on the History of the USSR: The Feudal Period. Novosel’-skii was awarded the Order of Lenin.
