Murray, James Edward

(1876–1961) U.S. senator; born near St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. He studied law at New York University. He became a U.S. citizen (1901) and set up a law practice in Butte, Mont. He served in the U.S. Senate (Dem., Mont.; 1934–61) where he supported Roosevelt's policies. He was ahead of his time in his advocacy of national health insurance and conservation measures.
