Its valley is the most productive farming area in the Murray Basin; fruits, rice, and vegetables are grown. Burrinjuck Dam and hydroelectric station are on the river. The Murrumbidgee rises in the northern spurs of the Australian Alps and flows along a plain in southeastern Australia. The main tributary is the Lachlan, which is on the right.
