Its valley is the most productive farming area in the Murray Basin; fruits, rice, and vegetables are grown. Burrinjuck Dam and hydroelectric station are on the river.

The Murrumbidgee rises in the northern spurs of the Australian Alps and flows along a plain in southeastern Australia. The main tributary is the Lachlan, which is on the right. The flow is regulated by the Burrinjuck Reservoir and a hydroelectric power plant in the upper course. Average annual discharge of water at Balranald is 77 cu m per sec. The Murrumbidgee is used for irrigation. During the rainy season it overflows and is then navigable to Wagga Wagga; during the dry season it sometimes dries up.
