Lys’va Strike of 1861

a strike of the workers of the Lys’va iron foundry (Perm’ Province), which belonged to Princess V. P. Butero-Rodali. It lasted from May 18 through May 23, and more than 500 workers took part, demanding increased wages. The strike ended as a result of the preachings of a priest and the threat from the troops who had been called to the plant. The strike’s initiators (M. Balandin, I. Shatov, F. Sushin, and others) were sentenced to be whipped with birch rods and returned to the “special surveillance” of the society of artisans.
