Northern Caucasus
(1) The territory encompassing Ciscaucasia and the northern slope of the Greater Caucasus, with the exception of the eastern portion of the Greater Caucasus in the Azerbaijan SSR. The Northern Caucasus also includes part of the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus, from the western tip of the Greater Caucasus to the Psou River on the boundary of the Abkhazian SSR. The Northern Caucasus encompasses the southern part of Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar and Stavropol’ krais, the Kabarda-Balkar ASSR, the Severnaia Osetiia ASSR, the Chechen-Ingush ASSR, the Dagestan ASSR, and part of the western part of the Kalmyk ASSR.
(2) A name for the Northern Caucasus Economic Region of the USSR, a region including Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar and Stavropol’ krais, the Dagestan ASSR, the Kabarda-Balkar ASSR, the Severnaia Osetiia ASSR, and the Chechen-Ingush ASSR but not the western part of the Kalmyk ASSR, which extends into Ciscaucasia.
