Northern Caucasus Meat and Wool Sheep

a breed of semifine-wooled sheep. Northern Caucasus Meat and Wool Sheep were developed between 1943 and 1960 at the Vos-tok Sovkhoz in Stavropol’ Krai by crossing Stavropol’ ewes with Lincoln and Romney rams and then inbreeding the first-generation crosses. The adult male weighs 90–100 kg (maximum 150 kg), and the adult female 55–60 kg. The fleece is of staple or staple-braid structure. The wool is uniform and even in length and fineness, with a coarse crimp. It is 12–13 cm long (maximum 18 cm) and of 58–50 quality. The wool clip is 9–13 kg for rams and 5.8–6.5 kg for ewes. The yield of scoured wool is 55–58 percent.

The wool from Northern Caucasus Meat and Wool Sheep is used primarily for making knitwear. The fertility is 130–140 lambs per 100 ewes. The breed is raised in the Northern Caucasus, Transcaucasia, the central oblasts of the RSFSR, the Buriat ASSR, and the Kazakh SSR.
