Benjámin, Lázsló

Born Dec. 15, 1915, in Budapest. Hungarian poet.

Benjámin began publishing in the second half of the 1930’s. From 1931 to 1940 he worked as a printer and metalworker and participated in the workers’ movement. From 1940 to 1945 he worked in a factory. His intensely dramatic poetry—the collections After the Creation of the World (1948), To Live Forever (1949), The Fifth Season of the Year (1962), and others—is imbued with socialist patriotism and deep reflections about man’s place in society. Benjamin has been awarded the Kossuth Prize twice.
