Moscow Archaeological Society

 

a scholarly society that existed from 1864 to 1922. It was involved in the study of Russia’s antiquities, the preservation of ancient monuments, and archaeological excavations. The society included the Commission for the Preservation of Monuments (from 1876), the Eastern Commission (from 1887), the Slavic Commission (from 1892), the Archaeological Commission (from 1896), and the Commission for the Study of Old Moscow (from 1909). In 1869 the society initiated the organization of archaeological conferences.
