Moscow Automotive Institute

one of the leading technical higher educational institutions in the USSR for the training of specialists for the automotive and tractor industries. Founded in 1939. Among the prominent scientists who participated in the organization of the institute and the development of its scientific schools were E. A. Chudakov, E. D. L’vov, D. K. Karel’skikh, V. I. Soroko-Novitskii, and P. N. Aksenov.

As of 1973 the institute had departments of automobiles and tractors, automobile and tractor engines, technology and automation of machine building, and foundry and forging production; an evening department; a department for advanced training of teachers in higher educational institutions and technicums; a preparatory division; a graduate school; and branches in Dmitrov and Likino (Moscow Oblast). The institute had 31 sub-departments and a sectorial laboratory for automotive engineering. The institute’s library had more than 600, 000 volumes. In the 1972–73 academic year there were about 6, 000 students, and the teaching staff numbered more than 400 (among them 38 professors and doctors of sciences and about 200 lecturers and candidates of sciences). The institute confers candidate’s and doctoral degrees and publishes symposia of its work. Since its founding the institute has trained about 14, 000 engineers.
