Katsones, Lambros
Born in 1752 in Levadhia, central Greece; died in 1805. Participant in the Greek national liberation movement.
Katsones fought as a volunteer (1770–74) in the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–74. After the war he served as an officer in the Greek infantry regiment in Russia. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–91 he commanded a volunteer Greek flotilla organized in 1788 in Trieste. In 1790 he attained the rank of colonel in the Russian Army. The victories of Katsones* flotilla caused a resurgence of the liberation movement in Greece against the Turkish yoke. Katsones led the movement. In 1792 he was defeated in a battle against the Turkish fleet supported by French ships and returned to Russia, where he commanded the Balaklava Greek battalion.
