Lünen

(lü`nən), city (1994 pop. 89,740), North Rhine–Westphalia, N central Germany, on the Lippe River. Its manufactures include iron, copper, metal fittings, textiles, and aluminum. Motor vehicles are assembled there and coal is mined. The city is an important port and rail junction. First mentioned in 1195, Lünen was chartered in 1265 and passed to the counts of Mark in 1302.
