Lüta

 

an administrative region in northeastern China on the southern tip of the Liaotung Peninsula in the province of Liaoning. It includes the cities of Lüshun (Port Arthur) and Talien (the name Löta is formed from the first syllables of the names of these cities), a number of districts, and small islands. Area, about 4,000 sq km. Population, 4 million (1970, estimate).

Lüta is an important port and commercial-industrial center. The nonfreezing port of Liita, situated on the Yellow Sea, plays an important role in China’s maritime economy and foreign trade ties. Enterprises include shipbuilding and other branches of machine building (locomotives, railroad cars, lathes) and the electrical-engineering, chemical, textile, and food industries.
