(ōrä`nyənbo͝orkh), city (1994 pop. 28,320), Brandenburg, NE Germany, on the Havel River. It is a center of a fruit-growing region. Manufactures include chemicals and steel products. Oranienburg was the site of one of the earliest concentration campsconcentration camp,
a detention site outside the normal prison system created for military or political purposes to confine, terrorize, and, in some cases, kill civilians.

Oranienburg

 

a city in the German Democratic Republic, in the Potsdam District, near Berlin. Situated on the Havel River and the navigable Oder-Havel Canal. Population, 20,900 (1972). Oranienburg has the machine-building, metalworking, food-processing, and chemical industries, the last producing sulfuric acid, carbon black, medicines, and paints. On the city’s northern outskirts, on the site of the former fascist German concentration camp of Sachsenhausen, is a monument to the victims of fascism.
