Moscow Construction Engineering Institute

(full name, V. V. Kuibyshev Moscow Construction Engineering Institute), the largest construction institute in the USSR. Founded in 1921 as the Moscow Practical Construction Institute. In 1933, after several reorganizations, it was renamed the Moscow Construction Engineering Institute. It was named in honor of V. V. Kuibyshev in 1935. Among the scientists who played an important role in the organization and development of the institute were I. G. Aleksandrov, V. N. Obraztsov, V. Z. Vlasov, I. M. Rabinovich, and N. S. Streletskii.

As of 1973 the institute had departments of industrial and civil-engineering construction, thermal power-engineering construction, hydroengineering construction, city planning, construction technology, heating and gas supply and ventilation, water supply and sewage, mechanical engineering, and automatic control systems; advanced training of construction engineers and teachers in higher educational institutions; a preparatory department; and an evening department. It also had a graduate school, 52 subdepartments, two special-problems laboratories, eight sectorial laboratories, and a scientific research institute for organization and control of construction work. There were more than 1 million volumes in the library.

In the 1972–73 academic year 12, 000 students were studying at the institute. The teaching staff numbered more than 1, 000, including 80 professors and doctors of sciences and 430 docents and candidates of sciences. The institute has published Sbornik trudov (Collection of Works) since 1938. Since its founding, the institute has trained about 38, 000 specialists. It was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1946.
