Moscow Road Transportation Institute

 

one of the largest educational and research institutions in the USSR in the areas of automotive industry, transportation, and highway, bridge, and airport construction. Founded in 1930. Among the scientists who were instrumental in establishing and developing scientific schools within the institute were E. A. Chudakov, B. S. Stechkin, N. R. Briling, D. P. Velikanov, I. V. Gribov, G. D. Dubelir, P. V. Sakharov, P. N. Shestakov, N. N. Ivanov, and V. V. Efremov.

In 1973 the institute had departments of road construction, motor-vehicle transportation, road-building machinery, airport construction and operation, hydraulics and control systems, economics, and mechanics and design; an evening department; three departments for advanced training (for teachers in higher educational institutions and technicums and for administrative workers and engineers); a preparatory department and division; a graduate school; 44 subdepartments; two special-problems laboratories; three sectorial laboratories; and a proving ground. There were about 700, 000 volumes in the library.

During the 1972–73 academic year more than 15, 000 students studied at the institute; there were 1, 900 teachers and scientists, including 61 professors and doctors of sciences and 346 lecturers and candidates of sciences. The institute confers candidate’s and doctoral degrees. It has published Trudy (Transactions) since 1934. Since its founding the institute has trained more than 18, 000 engineers.
