Lammert, Will

Born Jan. 5, 1892, in Hagen, in the present-day Federal Republic of Germany; died Oct. 30, 1957, in Berlin. German sculptor (German Democratic Republic).

Between 1911 and 1913, Lammert studied in Hamburg and Paris. In 1932 he became a member of the Communist Party of Germany. He worked in Essen (from 1922), Paris (1933), the USSR (1934–51), and Berlin. Lammert became a member of the German Academy of Arts in 1952 and was awarded the National Prize in 1959. His sculpture included portraits and monuments, for example, Karl Liebknecht (bronze, 1953, National Gallery, Berlin) and the monument to the victims of fascism in Ravens-briick (bronze, 1956–59). The latter work is noted for its high emotionality and for the expressiveness of its strongly and clearly modeled forms.
