Any parasomnia disorder attributed to an abnormal arousal mechanism with frequent and/or prolonged stress not resolved by a flight-or-fight reaction or relaxation.

Classic arousal disorders
Sleepwalking, sleep terrors, confusional arousals.

Risk factors
Sleep apnoea, heartburn, periodic limb movement during sleep.

Complications
Injury, violence, excess eating, disturbance of bedpartner or family.

Management
Prescription drugs, behaviour modification (e.g., hypnosis or relaxation/mental imagery).
