[′äp·tə·kəl ¦fī·bər ′sen·sər] (engineering) An instrument in which the physical quantity to be measured is made to modulate the intensity, spectrum, phase, or polarization of light from a light-emitting diode or laser diode traveling through an optical fiber; the modulated light is detected by a photodiode. Also known as fiber-optic sensor.
