Maass [mahs] Clara Louise (1876–1901). A graduate of the Christina Trefz Training School for Nurses in Newark who worked as a U.S. Army nurse during the Spanish-American War in Florida, Cuba, and the Philippines. In 1900 she returned to Cuba, where she was one of seven volunteers who were bitten by mosquitoes to test the theory that yellow fever is carried by mosquitoes. She survived an attack of yellow fever and volunteered to be bitten again; the second attack of fever proved fatal and she died at the age of 25 in Havana. |
