Moskovskaia Pravda

(Moscow Pravda), a city daily; the organ of the Moscow city committee of the CPSU and of the Moscow soviet.

The first issue of the newspaper appeared as an evening edition in Moscow on July 18, 1918, under the masthead Vechernie izvestiia Moskovskogo soveta rabochikh i krasnoarmeiskikh deputatov (Evening Herald of the Moscow Soviet of Workers’ and Red Army Deputies). In March 1920 the evening edition became a morning edition called Kommunisticheskii trud (Communist Labor), the organ of the Moscow party committee and the Moscow soviet. It was renamed Rabochaia Moskva (Working Moscow) on Feb. 7, 1922. On Mar. 1, 1939, Rabochaia Moskva was replaced by the newspaper Moskovskii bol’shevik, the organ of the Moscow committee and the Moscow city committee of the ACP (Bolshevik), as well as of the Moscow oblast and city soviets of working people’s deputies. The newspaper was called Moskovskaia pravda from Feb. 19, 1950.

On Feb. 13, 1958, two new newspapers were founded: Moskovskaia pravda, the organ of the Moscow city committee of the CPSU and the Moscow soviet, and Leninskoe znamia (Leninist Banner), the organ of the Moscow oblast committee of the CPSU and the Moscow oblast soviet of working people’s deputies. (The numbering of the latter’s issues continues the numeration of Moskovskaia pravda.) The newspaper was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1968. In 1973 its circulation was about 400, 000.
