Lin, Maya (Ying)

(1960– ) landscape architect, sculptor; born in Athens, Ohio. At age 21, and a graduate student at Yale's School of Architecture, she was the center of a major controversy when her design for a memorial to those who died in Vietnam was chosen to be erected in Washington, D.C. In 1990 her memorial to the civil rights movement was dedicated in Montgomery, Ala.

(1959–)Trained as an artist and an architect, she is best known for her large, minimalist sculptures and monuments. At the age of 21 and still a student, Lin created the winning design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.
