Lancaster Sound, arm of Baffin Bay, c.200 mi (320 km) long and 40 mi (60 km) wide, Nunavut Territory, Canada. It extends west between Devon and Baffin islands and is part of the shortest water route across N Canada to the Beaufort Sea. The sound and neighboring waters were included within the boundaries of an extensive marine conservation area in 2017. It was visited in 1616 by William BaffinBaffin, William, c.1584–1622, British arctic explorer. He was pilot on two expeditions (1615–16) sent out to search for the Northwest Passage under command of Robert Bylot, who was formerly with Henry Hudson. .....
