The registers were widespread in the 16th to 18th centuries in connection with the “regularization” of the allotment system favoring the feudal landowners. The oldest extant landbukh (for the estate of the archbishop of Riga) is dated 1564. The landbukh is a valuable source for studying the economy of Baltic peasants.
