metallic hydrogen[mə′tal·ik ′hī·drə·jən] (physical chemistry) A phase of hydrogen believed to occur at extremely high pressures, in which the material transforms to a conducting molecular solid. A phase of hydrogen believed to occur at still higher pressures, in which the molecular bonds that exist at lower pressures are broken and an atomic solid with the structure of an alkali metal is formed. |
