Landers, Ann

Landers, Ann (b. Esther Pauline Friedman)

(1918– ) journalist; born in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1955 she inherited her job as a Chicago-based advice columnist from a previous "Ann Landers," creating an international institution while competing with her twin sister, "Abigail Van Buren." She earned a devoted following for her guidance and advice to the perplexed, weathering her own 1975 divorce along the way; she also won many public service awards for her open discussions of medical issues.
