Landfriede

agreements and resolutions in medieval Germany that forbade private wars for certain periods. They were proclaimed by the emperor or the imperial diet. The first Lcmdfriede for the entire country was announced in 1103 by Henry IV. Decrees on Lcmdfriede were attempts to limit feudal brigandage and wars, which were ravaging the country and undermining trade. The attempts of unions of cities to implement Landfriede in practice in the 14th and 15th centuries, as well as the attempt to establish a “perpetual Landfriede”by the imperial reform of 1495, were defeated (although private wars were formally forbidden in 1495).
