Ooty Radio Telescope

Ooty Radio Telescope

(oo -tee) (ORT) A parabolic cylinder antenna, 350 meters long and 30 meters wide, built in Ooty, India by the National Center for Radio Astrophysics, Pune. The telescope is oriented N–S and built on the slope of a hill. It can rotate about its long axis and so track radio sources for about 9.5 hours every day. The pointing in the N–S direction is achieved by electrically phasing the 1056 dipoles along the focal line. The telescope operates at 326.5 MHz. The Ooty Synthesis Radio Telescope (OSRT) is an aperture synthesis telescope using the ORT and seven smaller parabolic cylinders up to 4 km away.
