Northern Luo

Luo, Northern

 

a group of related peoples living in the southern Sudan. They include the Shilluk, Anuak, Burun, and Maban, as well as the Luo (Jur), Thuri (Cat and Shatt), and Bor. Total population, about 500,000 (1970, estimate). The language of the Northern Luo belong to the Nilotic languages. The majority of the Northern Luo retain traditional beliefs (nature worship, cult of ancestors); some are Muslims. Their chief occupation is livestock raising.
