Orekhovets Peace

Orekhovets Peace

(also known as the Treaty of Nöteborg), the first peace treaty between Novgorod and Sweden. It was concluded on Aug. 12, 1323, in the fortress of Oreshek (Orekhovets), ending 30 years of hostilities. According to its provisions, the western part of the Karelian Isthmus and the neighboring region of Savolaks passed to Sweden, while the eastern part of the isthmus, with the town of Korela, remained under Novgorod’s control. The Orekhovets Peace for the first time officially established the border between Sweden and Rus’. The border proceeded from the Gulf of Finland along the Sestra River, northward to Lake Saimaa, and then northwest to the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia.
