Oreshnikov, Aleksei Vasil’evich

 

Born Sept. 9 (21), 1855, in Moscow; died there Apr. 3, 1933. Russian and Soviet numismatist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1928).

Oreshnikov worked at the Historical Museum from its opening in 1883 until his death. He directed the museum’s numismatic division and archives. Oreshnikov’s principal works are devoted to classical numismatics of the Northern Black Sea region, ancient Russian numismatics, and the history of medals. He compared data from coins with written, archaeological, and epigraphic evidence, allowing him to make broad historical deductions.
