Vainshtein, Osip L’vovich

Born Nov. 24 (Dec. 6), 1894, in Bendery. Soviet historian; doctor of history (1940). Member of the CPSU since 1944.

In 1918, Vainshtein graduated from the University of Odessa (Novorossiiskii University), where he taught from 1920 to 1935. He was a professor at Leningrad University and head of the subdepartment of medieval history. In 1955 he became senior staff member of the Leningrad Division of the Institute of History (since 1968 the Institute of History of the USSR) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Vainshtein was one of the founders of the Society of Marxist Historians, which was established in 1925. His main works deal primarily with problems of medieval studies, especially the historiography of the Middle Ages.
