Osipov, Afanasii Nikolaevich
Born Feb. 28, 1928, in the Second Irgid nasleg (a small administrative unit), now part of Gornyi Raion, Yakut ASSR. Soviet painter. Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1968). Corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1973).
Osipov studied at the V. I. Surikov Moscow Art Institute from 1949 to 1955. His paintings are devoted to the contemporary life of the peoples of Yakutia. Although they are primarily genre paintings, there is a strong emphasis on elements of portraiture. They tend toward a decorative, two-dimensional style. Examples include The Kolkhoz Governing Board (1967), the triptych The Gray Viliui (1969), and Building a House in the Nasleg Mytakh (1972), all housed at the Board of Art Exhibitions of the Art. Fund of the RSFSR, and Honored Coach of the USSR D. Korkin With his Students at the Churapcha School (1971), housed at the Board of Art Exhibitions of the Artists’ Union of the USSR. Osipov has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
