Lipocaic
Lipocaic
a hormonal preparation (extract) obtained from the pancreas of slaughtered cattle after the extraction of insulin.
The active principle of lipocaic, the chemical nature of which has not yet been determined, takes part in regulating fat metabolism in the liver, stimulating phospholipid metabolism when lipotropic factors (choline, methionine, casein) are present in the diet, and oxidizing higher fatty acids. It also acts to remove fat from liver cells, thereby preventing the development of adiposis hepatica. Lipocaic is taken internally in tablet form for the treatment of diabetes mellitus, liver diseases, and atherosclerosis.
