matched filter[′macht ′fil·tər] (computer science) In character recognition, a method employed in character property detection in which a vertical projection of the input character produces an analog waveform which is then compared to a set of stored waveforms for the purpose of determining the character's identity. (electronics) A filter with the property that, when the input consists of noise in addition to a specified desired signal, the signal-to-noise ratio is the maximum which can be obtained in any linear filter.
