documents containing descriptions of the boundaries of landholdings. The first land surveying books appeared in Rus’ in the 16th century. They are an important source for the history of the development of feudal land-holding and the historical geography of Russia. A large number of land surveying books were preserved because of the General Land Survey and the special surveys between the 1830’s and the 1850’s.
