Abastumani

 

an urban-type settlement and a mountain resort in Adigeni Raion, Georgian SSR. It is located on the southern slopes of the Meskheti mountain range, in the gorge of the Otskha River, at an altitude of 1,300 meters, 28 kilometers from the Akhaltsikhe railroad station. Population in 1969, 5,000.

The air in Abastumani is pure, clear, and moderately dry; there are no strong winds. Pine, fir, and spruce forests grow on the slopes of the mountains. The summers are moderately warm, and the winters are mild and sunny. The average January temperature is -6°C, the July temperature is 17°C; the precipitation is about 600 millimeters a year. Abastumani has facilities for the therapy of lung tuberculosis. The hot springs (temperature between 40° and 48°C), which are slightly mineralized, are used for the treatment of motor, nervous, and gynecological disorders and other diseases. There are many sanatoriums, a tuberculosis hospital, a polyclinic, and a bath therapy installation. The resort is open all year. The Abastumani As-trophysical Observatory is near Abastumani.
