Nigmati, Galimdzhan

(real name Galimdzhan Amirzhanovich Nigmatullin). Born July 14 (26), 1897, in the village of Urdiak in what is now the Bashkir ASSR; died Nov. 4, 1938. Soviet Tatar literary scholar. Member of the CPSU from 1919.

Nigmati studied at the Communist University for Workers of the East (1921–22) and at the Moscow Institute of Journalism (1923). From 1923 to 1926 he worked for the party, and from 1926 to 1929 he was editor of the newspaper Kyzyl Tatarstan (Red Tataria). Beginning in 1930 he taught at the Kazan State Pedagogical Institute, becoming a professor in 1934. He is the author of works on the history and theoretical problems of Tatar literature; these works include in the World of Literature (1925), Our Literature in the Years of the Revolution (1929), and Literature and Life (1931).
