antiport

antiport

[an´tĭ-port] a membrane" >cell membranetransport mechanism that transports two molecules at once through the membrane in opposite directions. See also countertransport and symport. Antiport: sodium-calcium exchanger. The electrochemical gradient of Na+ is used to pump Ca2+ out of the cell and thereby regulate the cytosolic Ca2+ level.

an·ti·port

(an'tē-pōrt), The coupled transport of two different molecules or ions through a membrane in opposite directions by a common carrier mechanism (antiporter). Compare: symport, uniport. [anti- + L. porto, to carry]
