[‚länzh·əl‚yā ′in‚deks] (chemistry) A measure, based on pH, of the degree of calcium carbonate saturation in water, where negative values indicate that corrosion may result (pH below 7, dissolves calcium carbonate), and positive values indicate that scale deposition may result (pH above 7, precipitates calcium carbonate).
