Maciá Y Llusa, Francisco

Born Oct. 21, 1859, in Villanueva y Geltru; died Dec. 25, 1933, in Barcelona. A leader of the Catalan nationalist movement.

In 1922, Maciá y Llusa founded the Catalan State Party, which advocated the granting of autonomy to Catalonia. An emigre in France from 1923 to 1931, he participated in organizing the 1924 and 1926 armed actions in Catalonia against Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship. Together with L. Companys Jover, Maciá y Llusa was one of the founders of the Left Republican Party of Catalonia in March 1931. After the establishment of the republic in Spain (April 1931), Maciá y Llusa was head of the Executive Council in 1931-32 and president of the autonomous Catalan government (Generalidad) in 1932-33.
