Lange, Thor
Born Apr. 9, 1851, in Copenhagen; died Feb. 22, 1915, in the village of Napadovka, in the Ukraine. Danish poet and translator.
Lange graduated in 1874 from the University of Copenhagen and came to Russia in 1875 as a teacher of classical languages. His translations and adaptations were issued in the collections From Faraway Lands (1876), Spring (1886), Summer Lightning (1896), and Faraway Melodies (1902). He translated classical authors and The Tale of Igor’s Campaign (1888) into Danish. He also translated works by Pushkin, Lermontov, Turgenev, Os-trovskii, Shevchenko, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Longfellow.
Lange was the author of the travel sketches Russia (1882); A Month in the East (1887), a collection of original verses in the romantic tradition; the collection of translated verses Through Colored Glass (1894), which included translations of Russian poetry; and a book about A. K. Tolstoy (1894).
