In northeastern WI, northeast of Wausau; organized Feb 27, 1879 as New County from Oconto County; name changed Feb 19, 1880. Name Origin: For Charles Michael de Langlade (1729-1800), an Indian leader who fought with the French against the British in the French and Indian War and with the British against the Americans during the Revolutionary War; he established the first permanent settlement at Green Bay (1764). Some claim for his father, Augustin de Langlade (1695-1771), a French settler who married an Indian woman
