Langres

(läN`grə), town (1990 pop. 11,026), Haute-Marne dept., NE France. An agricultural center, its manufactures include machinery and plastics. It has an old and famous cutlery industry. An episcopal see since the 3d cent., Langres has preserved a large part of its ancient fortifications. Diderot, whose father was a cutler, was born there.

a plateau in France, in the southeastern part of the Paris Basin. It forms part of the watershed between the basins of the Seine and Saône rivers. The plateau reaches a height of 532 m. It is made up primarily of limestone, with karstic development. There are sparse oak forests and thickets of shrubs. There is sheep breeding, viticulture, and wine-making.
