(məˈklɔːrɪnz) n (Mathematics) maths an infinite sum giving the value of a function f(x) in terms of the derivatives of the function evaluated at zero: f(x) = f(0) + (f′(0)x)/1! + (f″(0)x2)/2! + …. Also called: Maclaurin series [C18: named after Colin Maclaurin (1698–1746), British mathematician who formulated it]

the historically incorrect name (after C. Maclaurin) for a power series of the form

where f(0),f’(0),f”(0),…,f(n)(0),…are values of the given function f(x) and its successive derivatives for x = 0. The series was obtained by the British mathematician B. Taylor (published in 1715) but was known to Maclaurin. Maclaurin’s series is a special case of a Taylor’s series.
