a district in southern Rumania, on the Lower Danubian Plain. Area, 5,500 sq km; population, 507,500 (1972). The administrative center is the city of Slatina.

Olt District accounts for about 1.2 percent of Rumania’s total industrial output. Industry is represented by aluminum smelting (45 percent of the district’s industrial output) and the food industry (20.5 percent); there are also machine-building, leather and footwear, building-materials, wood-products, clothing, and chemical enterprises. The district’s agriculture accounts for 3.5 percent of the country’s gross agricultural output; 490,000 tons of Indian corn and 303,000 tons of wheat were harvested in 1973. Sunflowers, sugar beets, and tobacco are also grown. As of 1973 there were 138,000 head of cattle, 319,000 hogs, and 332,000 sheep.

(or Oltul), a river in Rumania; a left tributary of the Danube. Length, 709 km; drains an area of about 25,000 sq km. The Olt rises on the western slopes of the Eastern Carpathians, crosses the Southern Carpathians in a gorge, and flows over the Lower Danubian Plain. It empties into the Danube near the city of Turnu-Măgurele. High water is in spring, and there are flash floods caused by rain in summer. Average discharge in the lower course is about 160 cu m per sec. The river is navigable for 50 km from the mouth. The cities of Făgăraş, Rîmnicu-Vîlcea, and Slatina are on the Olt River.
