A rare variety of type 2 diabetes mellitus in which nonobese family members develop diabetes, sensorineural hearing loss, and other related anomalies. The disease is inherited by children from affected mothers as a result of a mutation in mitochondrial DNA. Associated findings in some patients include macular dystrophy, myopathy, cardiomyopathy, and early-onset nephropathy.
