musicians' overuse syndrome

musicians' overuse syndrome

Severe, disabling pain and loss of speed, accuracy and agility from functional disturbance in the muscles used in playing musical instruments. This occurs from overwork or excessive practising, especially if there is faulty technique. The affected muscles become swollen and there may also be some loss of feeling in the part. Treatment involves strict limitation of playing time and the use of well-designed supports for instruments. It may sometimes be necessary to give up playing for weeks or months.
