La Oroya

 

a city in Peru, situated on the Mantaro River in the Cordillera Occidental at an elevation of 3,650 m. Population, 24,800 (1962).

A railroad and highway junction, La Oroya has a nonferrous metallurgical industry involving such metals as copper, lead, zinc, silver, and bismuth and produces rolled copper wire. Copper, lead, zinc, and other metals are mined nearby. There is a hydroelectric power plant on the Mantaro River.
