Any of a heterogeneous group of lymphokines secreted by sensitised lymphocytes, the most potent of which is IFN-gamma. IFN-activated macrophages have increased bactericidal and tumouricidal activity and morphological evidence of “maturation”—e.g., increased spreading, pseudopod formation and vacuolisation.
